Bridging the Pocomoke
Snow Hill is a river town. The Pocomoke River is embedded in the town's history and features prominently in the recreation, commerce, transportation and lives of the residents and visitors. The State Highway Administration reveals that, "Historic photographs reveal little change since this single-leaf bascule, one of the simplest and smallest of Maryland’s movable spans, was built across the Pocomoke River in 1932. Carrying MD 12 it measures only 90 feet long, including the approach span. Its neoclassical concrete tender’s house is unoccupied; boaters must call in advance to schedule an opening."
Opening the Bridge -- Call 410-632-0511
If you travel on the Pocomoke, you may need to have the bridge raised as the river is tidal and at high tide, there is little clearance, even for a kayaker. The bridge is open by request with 5 hours of notice. Call 410-632-0511 to schedule Monday-Friday 7am-3:30pm. The birding and fishing are fabulous on the Pocomoke and many of us enjoy swimming in the river or just picnicking on her banks.
